Design variants: compare and transfer a direction

Explore the same saved content in three compositions, then apply only the design changes you select.

Open Design variants on a saved CLM draft#

Choose Design variants in the project toolbar. This workspace composes the same saved content in three directions: Editorial, Spotlight and Balanced.

The directions are built from the actual saved source content. Wording, data, evidence links and brand context remain pinned, and existing assets are reused. Design variants is a focused design-transfer workflow, separate from asking Builder to rewrite content.

Choose the source and the facets to transfer#

  1. Under Pinned source, choose a Source slide. Confirm the saved revision number.
  2. Under Transfer these facets, select the aspects you want to compare: Layout, Typography, Imagery treatment, Motion or Interaction treatment.
  3. Under Selected draft slides, choose each destination slide.
  4. Compare the three composition directions and use Select direction on the one you want to explore.

The source slide is not automatically a destination. Select it explicitly if you want to adopt the new design there too. Object order and kind determine which source and target objects can accept a transfer.

Retain a proposal and compare the result#

Choose Preview selected transfer. Studio retains a proposal; the saved deck changes only after you accept it.

Use Preview slide to inspect each selected target. Switch between Saved before and Candidate to compare the design with the same content. Review Exact transfer impact for changes, unchanged facets and incompatible objects. Expand Exact changed values when you need to inspect a particular adjustment.

If Studio reports No compatible changes, review the selected facets and targets rather than assuming the direction was applied. A customized renderer can also prevent transfer to that slide.

Accept compatible changes or keep the existing design#

After reviewing the candidate, choose Accept compatible changes to update the saved draft, or Discard proposal to leave it unchanged.

Inspect the resulting saved revision and preview the presentation. A transfer of motion or interaction treatment still deserves a playback check, especially where slide navigation or controls are involved.

A proposal based on an earlier saved revision remains available to inspect, but cannot replace the current draft as if it were still fresh. Create a new proposal from the current saved source before accepting.

Return to earlier proposals#

Saved proposal history lists retained directions, their base revision and their disposition. Use Refresh history to read the current list and reopen a proposal for inspection.

Opening a historical proposal does not restore its design to the current presentation. To recover an earlier saved presentation state, use Undo / history and its restore workflow.

Check an interrupted operation#

If the panel retains an unconfirmed proposal or acceptance, use Check saved operation. Use Retry original request only when offered for the retained operation.

If another author owns a retained acceptance, you can inspect its saved outcome; only that author can retry it. Resolve the existing operation before starting another transfer so a later result cannot obscure which design was accepted.
